Inverness Airport has landed a European aviation industry award for departure service.

With added resonance during the pandemic, the Airports Council International (ACI) Europe commendation for 2020 placed special emphasis on cleanliness and hygiene.

Inverness, the gateway airport to the Highlands, was judged by customer responses to be among the top four airports with under two million passengers a year in its airport service quality award category.

It shared the billing with Aeropuerto de Federico García Lorca Granada-Jaén in Granada, Spain; Aeropuerto de San Sebastián, Spain; and, Joao Paulo II Airport in Ponta Delgada, Portugal.

Inverness Airport general manager Graeme Bell said: "The past 12 months have been incredibly tough for the aviation industry.

"Inverness Airport has remained open throughout the pandemic for provision of lifeline, essential and emergency services and we have implemented a range of additional measures to ensure the safety of our passengers and staff.

"We have confidence in the Covid-19 mitigation procedures in place at the airport and it is reassuring to see that our passengers think the same.

"As we prepare for gradual resumption of air services, the Inverness Airport team will continue doing what they do best and endeavour to exceed passenger expectations."

ACI said the pandemic had a dramatic impact on global passenger traffic in 2020, and changed customer perceptions and expectations of the airport experience.

Despite the added challenge of collecting departure survey responses in 2020, airports in Europe managed to collect data throughout the year to measure customer experience.

Olivier Jankovec, director general of ACI Europe, said: "These accolades signify the very essence of Europe’s airports: resilience, and the highest standards of customer care.

"This has been the toughest year in our industry’s history so bravo to every airport community as they continue to deliver excellence in the face of adversity."
