A WESTER Ross mountain pass has been blocked by heavy overnight snows.

Highland Council has confirmed that the Bealach na Bà on the Applecross peninsula is currently closed to all traffic.

“Conditions are being monitored and the road will be reopened as soon as practical,” said a spokeswoman for the council.

The road closure came amid heavy snowfalls in several parts of the Highlands last night.

Snow gates on the A939 are currently closed at Tomintoul, and major trunk roads were left in a treacherous condition for a time during the early hours – with live traffic cameras showing a completely white road surface on the A9 at Daviot shortly before midnight last night. The same scene was completely clear on Thursday morning.

A Met Office yellow warning for snow remained in force for parts of Ross-shire on Thursday.
