Hand-knitted hats will be distributed to sailors arriving at a Ross-shire port thanks to knitting enthusiasts in the Highland capital.

Members of a weekly knitting group at Merkinch Community Centre have knitted dozens of hats and neck warmers for the Sailors' Society.

They were handed over to Drew and Elizabeth Anderson, based at Invergordon.

Mr Anderson is a ship welfare visitor with the charity.

Kay MacKenzie, of the knitting group, said the hats would be distributed among crew members coming into the port from all over the world, often from warmer countries.

She said it was the second batch of hats the group had knitted for the charity after she attended a talk by Mr Anderson.

The knitting group, which meets every Monday morning, has about 12 members.

“We always have something on the go,” Mrs MacKenzie said.

“We knit a lot for the Carr Gomm charity shop in Inverness. But if anything comes up often we will do that, too.”

Members were unable to meet during lockdown but their meetings have now resumed.

“I love the companionship and I love knitting – and I like to know it is going to a good cause,” Mrs MacKenzie said.
