Ullapool Rotary’s annual golf day has raised a sum of cash for local good causes, including a donation in memory of a dearly-missed local lad.

Earlier this month, the rotary club held their third instalment of their golf day, solidifying it as a well-established feature on the Ullapool Golf Club calendar.

Nine teams took part, with a mixture of local businesses and some from further afield, such as: Ullapool Construction, Ullapool Harbour, RWR Catering, Lochbroom FC, Ullapool Rotary Club, Mowi, Ullapool Golf Club, GA Barnie and OMAC Construction from Stornoway.

As well as this, former Scotland goalkeeper Alan Rough was a guest player and speaker at the event.

“It was a fun day, with the scramble format making for a relaxed yet competitive match,” said Steve Boyle, secretary of the rotary club. “Ullapool Construction came out as the winners, with an impressive score of 55.4. Over £2500 was raised in total.

“The funds will all go to local good causes — we have already given £300 to Ullapool Golf Club to go towards a defibrillator, and we have given £250 to support Kyle Mackenzie’s fundraiser in memory of Stefan Mauger.”

In January of this year, swathes of tributes were made following the death of 20-year-old Stefan, who fought cancer for five years. The loss of the former Ullapool High School pupil and Lochbroom FC player sent shockwaves through the village, and wider Wester Ross area.

Earlier this month, Kyle Mackenzie took to the boxing ring to raise £1500 for LoveOliver — a charity supporting children with cancer, who helped Stefan and his family during his lengthy battle with Ewing’s Sarcoma.

Steve continued: “From all of our fundraising last year, we were able to support junior golf, DofE, the air ambulance, Lochbroom FC, CHAS, Highland Hospice, Macmillan, GALE and district nurses, to name a few. We distributed over £5500 for local and Highland causes, as well as support a project in Nepal and a shelter box for Gaza in Palestine.

“We are also actively seeking new members.”
