AN award-winning Wester Ross community garden has a received a tasty funding boost from a world renowned Scottish company.

The Gairloch Sitooterie, a seaside wildlife observation garden in Pier Road, Gairloch, has struggled to cope with dry periods as there is no on-site fresh water supply available.

A water bowser, previously used by the St Andrews in Bloom, is now being purchased thanks to funding by Scottish Company Tunnock’s well known for its teacakes and caramel wafers.

Gairloch Sitooterie co-ordinator David Carruthers said he was absolutely delighted by this gesture.

“This sponsorship by Tunnock’s is so appreciated and is much welcomed for the one area where the garden is struggling to cope.

Yes, Wester Ross gets lots of rain but not necessarily when we need it. We have had a long recent drought period and we have been backwards and forwards with watering cans to keep the 3000 bulbs planted this year regularly watered. And the May and June planting period for young bedding plants is particularly vulnerable.

A bowser will be a dream come true”.

Tunnock’s managing director, Mr Boyd Tunnock, said: “I am delighted to assist this award-winning community garden which I enjoy visiting when I holiday in the area. I hope our contribution will help this community project go from strength to strength”.
