A 33-year-old Caithness man who drove in Wester Ross while he was disqualified has been restricted to his home for the next four months and told to wear an electronic tag as an alternative to custody.

Martin Gunn of Holburn Avenue, Thurso, previously pleaded guilty at Inverness Sheriff Court to being behind the wheel on the A832 near Gairloch Filling Station on February 16, 2024.

Sentence had been deferred for a background report and Gunn appeared before Sheriff Gary Aitken who imposed the order to run from 7pm to 7am.

Defence solicitor George Mathers told the court that Gunn still had over 200 hours of unpaid work to complete after the community payback order was imposed on his client in 2022 for other offences.

Sheriff Aitken said it left him little choice on how to deal with Gunn but decided against imprisoning him. The sheriff banned him from driving for four years and also forfeited Gunn's car which the court heard was worth a few hundred pounds.

Mr Mathers said his client did not oppose forfeiture. He added: "From a young age, he has been on drugs and drink but is off both now. He is hopeful of regaining employment offshore."
