DINGWALL and Highland Marts sold 3123 sheep of all classes at its latest sale.

Lambs (2,168) averaged £76.77 and sold to £121 for a Cheviot from South Balkeith, Tain.

Ewes (445) averaged £69.37 and sold to £210 for a Texel from Druid Temple Farm, Inverness.

Rams (462) averaged £98.82 and sold to £195 for a Suffolk cross from Dunearn Farm, Nairn.

Feeding Sheep (48) sold to £104 for a Texel from Tychat, Drumnadrochit.

The auctioneer's verdict: “The first store sheep sale of 2022 saw all classes of hoggs cash in at an exceptional trade despite the recent downturn in the prime sale rings this week. Long keep hoggs look by miles the dearest commodity in the market.

"The exceptional trade transferred from the hoggs to the ewes with lean ewes in particular very dear. There wasn’t a lot of power around but what was here met a firm enquiry and were every bit as dear as seen here on Tuesday.

"The annual cast tup sale saw a full ring side of buyers who participated in a furious frenzy of bidding which culminated in a colossal trade throughout and the section averaging £98.82 per head. This is a fantastic average considering there was plenty of old age pensioners venturing down from the Highland wilderness in search of a retirement home.”
