A Fortrose Academy pupil (12) has scooped a prestigious national award for her fundraising work for a charity close to her heart.

Sophie Whitby has been fundraising for the last two years to raise funds for the Equine Grass Sickness Fund, by doing sponsored rides. The charity is close to Sophie’s heart, having previously lost one of her own horses to this disease.

Jess, Sophie’s mum, said: “We lost a pony to this awful disease a few years ago, and Sophie has been dedicated to help find answers and a cure to this awful illness that affects horses. Her latest charity ride was along the Affric to Kintail Way, as well as holding a charity ceilidh to help raise funds. So far, Sophie has raised over £6000 — and she plans and organises all these events by herself with a little bit of support from me.”

As a result of her hard work, Sophie won Youth Volunteer of the Year at the National Equestrian Awards 2024, at Dunblane Hydro on September 27.

Jess continued: “She was delighted to have received recognition for all her hard work and dedication — even just being nominated for the award, let along win it. There are so many talented youngsters in all different areas of the equine community, so it is a great privilege to have been chosen.

“Sophie’s main goal is to raise awareness and be a part of finding a cure to Equine Grass Sickness once and for all. Her plans for 2025 have already started!”
