Fortrose Academy girl becomes Scottish orienteering champion

A FORTROSE Academy girl has become a Scottish orienteering champion.

Taking place over the bank holiday weekend (May 3), the Scottish Orienteering Championships were held on the sand dunes of Barry Buddon near Dundee.

Around 500 participants took part in the national event, ranging from age 10 to 80-plus, using a map to navigate between markers on a range of courses from 2km to 16km in length.

One of the winners was S2 Fortrose Academy pupil Cora Comisso, who came first in her age group.

Acting deputy headteacher, Muir Morton said: “We are always delighted to encourage and support our young people in partaking in different event, and we always take great pride in sharing their achievements. Cora has done exceptionally well.”

Competitions included an individual race on the Saturday and a relay race on the Sunday, with participants taking on age-specific courses in terms of length and difficulty.

Individual championship prize-winners were: 1st, M16A Douglas McDonald; 1st, M21E Philip Vokes; 1st, M10A Ella Milton; 1st, W14A Cora Comisso; 2nd, W12A Freya Carter; 3rd, W16A Hazel Cload; 3rd, W18E Iona Scott; 3rd, M60L Colin Salisbury.
