A FORMER Ross-shire minister has been announced as the 2017 Free Church Moderator Designate.

Rev Derek Lamont, minister of St Columba’s Free Church in Edinburgh, will start his duties from the May 2017 Assembly.

He succeeds the current Moderator of the Free Church, Rev Dr John Nicholls.

Mr Lamont has served as a minister in the Free Church for nearly 26 years.

He began his ministry in Rosskeen Free Church near Alness as assistant minister under Rev Kenny Macdonald, and then became the minister of Rosskeen when Mr Macdonald retired.

He spent 11 years serving in Rosskeen before becoming minister of St Columba’s Free Church in Edinburgh.

Mr Lamont has been minister in St Columba’s for over 15 years.

Born in Corpach, near Fort William, he is married to Catriona and they have four children.

He follows in the steps of his father Donald and grandfather Farquhar Matheson in being nominated as Moderator Designate.

Mr Lamong said: "It’s an exciting time to serve in the Free Church as we face the challenges of sharing the Gospel in what is often regarded as a post Christian society. But we are seeing God’s grace transforming lives and, against all the odds, churches growing and new ones starting.

"To be elected as Moderator designate of our General Assembly in the face of these challenges is an honour and a privilege."
