A visitor has highlighted the issue of fly-tipping in the Highlands when he saw dumped waste at an Easter Ross beauty spot.

Lewis Turner posted photos of the roof insulation, which had been left at Ben Wyvis car park, and he shared them via social media saying exactly what he thought of the culprits.

When she saw the evidence Maree Todd, the MSP for Caithness, Sutherland and Ross, said such actions would not be tolerated and she hoped the suspects could be traced and punished.

She said: "Fly-tipping is illegal, damaging to the environment and communities, and costly to the taxpayer.

“This type of behaviour will not be tolerated, and I hope those responsible for the incident at Ben Wyvis car park are identified and face the full consequences of their actions.

“At the beginning of the year, the Scottish Government introduced a set of firm new measures to deter fly-tipping, which included more than doubling the fines for perpetrators and issuing best practice guidance to support local authorities with issuing fines.

“The Scottish Government is also looking at using civil penalties to enforce offences.”

The Ben Wyvis car park is the property of Forest Land Scotland and a Highland Council spokeswoman said: “Fly-tipping is illegal dumping of waste and can be reported to the Council 24/7 using the online forms at www.highland.gov.uk/report.

“We can issue fines from £200 to £20,000 or the offender can receive six months in prison – up to five years if hazardous waste is dumped.

“We investigate, but do not remove items from private land.”
