FIREFIGHTERS are tackling a blaze at Glen Wyvis distillery near Dingwall.

The fire, reported at 3.53 pm today, broke out in a biomass storage room containing eight tonnes of woodchip.

Three appliances, from Dingwall, Beauly and Inverness, are attending the site at Scroggie Farm just north of Dingwall.

A fire brigade spokeswoman said nobody had been harmed by the blaze.

The spokeswoman said: "The fire fighters are using four breathing apparatus's and three hose reel jets, pumping water from the emergency water supply

"The main hatch to the wood chip silo has been opened from the top to also fight the fire from there.

"There's no indication anyone harmed or any evacuation of adjacent buildings."

David O'Connor, the company chairman of Glen Wyvis, said:"The fire is contained within the biomass woodchip storage room adjacent to the distillery.

"There's still a fair amount of smoke coming out of it. Because it is woodchip burning we need to try and get as much of the woodchip out of the store as we can because it will just continue to burn.

"There are fire officers in breathing apparatus here from three appliances. I think they will be here for sometime.

"There's no danger to nearby buildings. It is contained within the woodchip storage area.

"The building ablaze is attached to the distillery, but there are fire walls and the like to protect it.

"I would reassure investors although there has been a fire, it is under control and contained, although fire services continue to operate on site."

Mr O'Connor said four employees were working at the distillery as the blaze broke out.
