INTERNET-BASED community station North Highland Radio has been granted charitable status paving the way to access new channels of funding.

The Alness-based station also revealed that former MFR stalwart Tich McCooey has come on board as an advisor to its board — with the broadcasting legend not ruling out a return to the airwaves.

Lorraine Christie, the chair of the new board, said: “This news really means that we can now start to build the station in the way many of us have envisaged since the very start.

"Becoming a registered Scottish Charity now means we can access funding that previously was not available to us so that we can now start to deliver upon our community-based charitable objectives included in our application.”

She added: “The fact that Tich has decided to become part of the North Highland Radio journey is just the icing on the cake this week.

"We have lots of experience on our board in terms of being confident in driving the charity forward in business terms but Tich now brings an amazing amount of advice and support to the table by way of the thirty years broadcast experience he has under his belt.”

McCooey said: “Local community radio is what I got involved in three decades ago and this type of broadcasting is in my blood, so I am really excited about being involved at the early stages of North Highland Radio.”

He added: “I only hope I can bring something to the table which will see this fantastic station continue its growth to bigger and better things. Who knows I may even just get the bug to get behind those mics once again...but for that part we’ll just have to wait and see.”

North Highland Radio can be found at northhighlandradio.co.uk or on the various radio apps on any mobile device or PC.
