Endoscopy services will be boosted at Raigmore Hospital for a 30-week period.
Endoscopy services will be boosted at Raigmore Hospital for a 30-week period.

NHS Highland says capacity for endoscopy screening will be increased to serve more patients across the region.

The funding, an investment of £1.35 million from the Scottish Government, will allow NHS Highland to place a temporary unit on the Raigmore Hospital site dedicated solely to endoscopy service as well as paying for additional staff to carry out the work.

The new service will be in place for 30 weeks from the end of September during which it is expected that an additional 2400 procedures will be carried out.

NHS Highland chief executive Paul Hawkins said: “This is a significant achievement given the limited funding available nationally.

"It will allow us to carry out many more scopes during that 30-week period, benefitting our patients and bringing down our waiting time."

He added: “We recognise that capacity in endoscopy has been a challenge to us for some time but this investment shows the confidence there is in NHS Highland to deliver these improvements in a targeted fashion.

“I’m delighted that we will be able to increase the service provided for patients and I look forward to seeing the much improved waiting time position.”

An endoscopy is a procedure where organs inside your body are looked at using an instrument called an endoscope.

An endoscope is a long, thin, flexible tube that has a light and camera at one end.

Images of the inside of your body are shown on a television screen.
