Ross-shire’s Port of Nigg has an ‘exciting future’ following its takeover by Japan’s Mitsui, believes Caithness, Sutherland and Ross MSP Maree Todd
A Highland port has an “exciting future” ahead following its recent takeover, a local MSP has said.
Caithness, Sutherland & Ross MSP Maree Todd was speaking about the Port of Nigg following a visit to the site.
Her trip to the Easter Ross port came after the sale of three of the group’s companies – the Port of Nigg, Global Energy (Fabrication) and Global Energy Services – to Japanese firm and investor Mitsui.
Maree Todd MSP said: “A big thanks to Rory and Stuart from Port of Nigg for meeting me last week to discuss the exciting future of the port following its acquisition by Mitsu.
“The Port of Nigg is at the forefront of Scotland’s drive to net zero, leading in offshore wind, marine engineering, and sustainable energy projects. It is a trusted and respected name in the energy sector, and I’m delighted to see its expertise and workforce recognised on the global stage.”
She added: “Global Energy Group is firmly rooted in the community, supporting jobs and the local economy.
“Over the years, we’ve seen the Port of Nigg go from strength to strength, bringing with it significant opportunities – including securing the bid for the Inverness and Cromarty Firth Green Freeport.
“With depopulation being one of the biggest challenges we face, tackling it requires long-term solutions. That means looking closely at our industries, identifying opportunities for growth, and creating new, high-skilled jobs.
“This acquisition marks a new chapter for the Port, but I am confident its operations will maintain the same values and commitment to the community, delivering substantial benefits both locally and nationally.”
