THE Scottish National Party has come out on top in the Highland vote for the European Parliamentary Elections.

There was a 36 per cent turn out with 65,307 votes cast in the Highlands.

The SNP topped the poll with 19,810 votes and the Liberal Democrats were second with 12,189 votes.

The Labour Party came third with 9,163 and the Conservative Party were a close fourth with 9,088 votes.

UKIP received 7,818 votes and the Scottish Green Party polled 5,615.

These votes, counted on Sunday at the Highland Football Academy in Dingwall, were relayed to Scotland’s Regional Returning Officer.

It has been declared that the SNP and Labour each won two of Scotland’s six MEP seats, with one each for the Conservatives and UKIP.

The Liberal Democrats, who came sixth nationally, lost their only European Parliament seat.
