Highland Council say an investigation is ongoing after a biomass boiler caught fire at an Easter Ross school, forcing an emergency evacuation.

Staff and pupils at Kiltearn Primary in Evanton had to take refuge at a nearby sports hall on their last day of term after an alert was raised shortly after 1pm on Friday, October 11.

Emergency services were soon on the scene, with the school confirming on social media that every staff member and pupil was safe and accounted or.

The local authority say the school is set to reopen after the October holidays next week – but the cause of the fire remains unknown.

A Highland Council spokesperson said: “The school will reopen next week and there will be no operational impact to the site.

“The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing – once this is established, any required inspections or alterations will be carried out across the estate as required.

“There are two other boilers on our estate which are the same make and model as the biomass at Kiltearn, out of a total of 110 biomass boilers on the non-domestic estate.

“All boilers are regularly inspected, serviced, and maintained by an approved contractor in accordance with the manufacturer’s requirements.”
