Knitters from Tain have been busy creating Easter chicks to raise much-needed funds for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Brood team captain, Shona Docherty, said she was indebted to the 10 knitters from the area who came forward to support the charity, and to date they have laid more than 400 chicks.

Mrs Docherty and a team of volunteers made masks earlier in the course of the pandemic to raise cash for the cancer charity.

Mrs Docherty said: "We have been knitting chickens and putting a Cadbury's Cream Egg inside every single one.

"We have been selling them for £1.50, but people have been so generous.

"It will make a real difference to our fundraising as it has been really, really hard to raise money when we can't do all the normal things that we would do to raise the money."
She said the idea for making the chicks was hatched when she was looking for some wool to give to a friend for another project.

She said: "I found the wee chick and I thought that it would be a good idea for fundraising.

"We have 10 of us all knitting away, " she laughed, "we are like the grannies from the Shreddies advert on TV.

"My daughter put it on Facebook that we were selling the chicks and the daughter in law of one of the other knitters set up a way to take the payments. It has been a real team effort.

"Within 23 minutes of the Facebook post we had sold 31 chicks and over night that number went up to 210, so we have all been very busy.

"Most people have been coming to the house to pick them up, and there has been a lot of chicks being safely handed over at the school gate."

Mrs Docherty said there were a few chicks left and anyone wanting to buy one could contact her directly on 01862 892711.
