A835 car crash near Maryburgh results in drink-driving charge for Highland motorist who abandoned vehicle ‘in middle of the road’

A driver has been charged with drink-driving and "several other offences" after a car crashed and was abandoned on a Highland trunk road.

The incident occurred on the A835 near Maryburgh on Saturday night and resulted in the vehicle being "abandoned in the middle of the road"..

Officers made the arrest as part of a wider road safety operation which occurred on a number of roads that are part of the North Coast 500 touring route.

These included the A836, the A835 and the A832.

As part of the wider operation, officers carried out a number of vehicle checks and stops, as well as offering essential road safety advice.

One 41-year-old failed a roadside drug test for cannabis at a static vehicle check point in Bonar Bridge.

Elsewhere, six motorists were caught speeding, one was seen without a seatbelt on, one was found with a licence offence, one without proper insurance and there was also one case of careless driving.

Fourteen other motorists were caught committing other road offences.

Constable Whitehead stated: "We are committed to making our roads as safe as possible for everyone. If you choose to drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol, you will be dealt with robustly.

"We encourage the public to report any concerns about impaired driving via 101 or anonymously through Crimestoppers. If you believe someone is actively driving while impaired, call 999 immediately."
