TWO Dingwall butchers have been proving they are in the upper crust of the Scottish pie-making trade after triumphing in a national competition.

Pies made by Fraser Brothers and John M Munro, both butchers in the town’s High Street, have been judged among the best in the country at the 2011 Scottish Craft Butchers Steak Pie Evaluation held in Perth.

The long established butchers' businesses lifted four awards between them - two of them much coveted Golds.

A total of 169 pies from throughout the country were tested for appearance, flavour, filling and appeal by a panel of judges including experts, cooks and interested consumers.

Fraser Brothers’ venison pie scooped a Gold Award while their traditional steak pie took a Silver.

A pork, apple and cider pie produced by John M Munro also won a Gold Award and the company lifted a Silver prize for their traditional steak pie.

Charlie Munro, of John M Munro, and Graham Mowat of Fraser Borthers were presented with their awards at a special ceremony held in Forres this week.

The event was organised by the Scottish Federation of Meat Traders in conjunction with the Scotch Butchers Club and William Sword Ltd.

David Mooney, direct sales manager of William Sword, said: "These awards are extremely important in the Scottish meat industry calendar, celebrating excellence across the board.

"To receive an award is a fantastic achievement as these winners represent the upper crust of the Scottish meat industry, tremendous given the high standard of produce across Scotland as a whole."

Laurent Vernet, head of marketing with Quality Meat Scotland which runs the Scotch Butchers Club, sponsors of the Steak Pie Evaluation, congratulated the Dingwall butchers on the quality of their entries, and said: "Scotch Beef, with its acclaimed European PGI status, is renowned throughout the world for its flavour.

This year we are celebrating the 20th anniversary of the quality assurance schemes which underpin the Scotch Beef label, as well as Scotch Lamb and Specially Selected Pork, and guarantee the quality and welfare behind its production.

"It is wonderful that our butchers can combine both innovative and traditional skills to produce products such as these mouth-watering, top quality steak pies which make the most of our wonderful Scotch Beef."
