AN unemployed Dingwall man who crashed his girlfriend's car after taking it without permission has been fined £200 and banned for six months.

Dingwall Sheriff Court heard last week that Liam Bene (21) was found sleeping in the crashed vehicle by police.

He had taken the car from the car park at the Royal Hotel in the town’s High Street.

He later mounted a pavement at Drummond Road in Evanton, colliding with a wall.

Bene, who was staying at the Royal Hotel at the time, admitted taking the car without the owner’s permission and driving carelessly without insurance on January 28.

Depute fiscal Stewart Maciver said the day before, Bene’s girlfriend had visited him at the Royal Hotel and seemed to have fallen asleep.

About 10.30am the car was seen being driven erratically and went off the road near a local school.

“It mounted a pavement and damaged the vehicle and the wall,” said the fiscal.

He said the police were called and they found Bene asleep in the crashed vehicle.

Solicitor Aileen Macinnessaid Bene was at a loss to explain the accident.

She said he had taken the car to visit his father.
