A cycling event is set to close one of the most spectacular stretches of road on the Highlands’ NC500 route for two-and-a-half hours later this month.

With the ‘bucket-list’ annual Bealach na Bà Cycle Sportive, first staged in summer 2006, enjoying a revitalisation of numbers this year, Highland Council is imposing a temporary closure of the C1087 from 10 am to 12.30 pm on Saturday May 17.

The race through the Wester Ross wilds is expected to see 500 cyclists take on the vertiginous climbs of the famous route.

A Highland Council spokesman said: “This is to facilitate the holding of the Bealach Na Ba cycle event.

“The road will be closed to vehicular traffic, with the exception of vehicles used by event organisers, the full length of the C1087 Bealach Na Ba Road from its junction with the A896 Shieldaig-Kishorn-Lochcarron Road westwards to its junction with the C1091 Applecross-Shieldaig (Coast) Road.

“Access will be maintained at all times for emergency vehicles and pedestrians.”

To avoid the road closure an alternative route will be available via A896 Shieldaig-Kishorn-Lochcarron Road and the C1091 Applecross-Shieldaig (Coast) Road.
