EIGHT-three further Covid-19 coronavirus cases have been detected across the NHS Highland health board region.

The area’s cumulative number of known cases rose from 5711 to 5794 when Public Health Scotland released its latest daily update on Wednesday.

Across Scotland, almost 3000 new positive tests were recorded in the past 24 hours – some 2969 fresh infections, representing 7.3 per cent of all people tested over that time period.

The number of people receiving treatment for the virus in Scottish hospitals last night fell by one, to 170.

Of those, 18 were in intensive care – a figure which was unchanged from Tuesday.

Sadly a further five deaths have been registered among people who tested positive for the virus in the previous 28 days.

Meanwhile, elsewhere in the north of Scotland, there were no new cases overnight in either NHS Shetland or NHS Eileanan Siar, but NHS Orkney detected one fresh infection – taking its overall total since the start of the pandemic to 82.

There were 175 new positive tests across NHS Grampian, for a running tally of 16,653.

And the overall total in NHS Tayside rose by 352, to 18,097.

There have now been 260,711 confirmed cases of the virus in Scotland since the pandemic began.

More than 3.68 million Scots have now received their first vaccination jag, while almost 2.62 million have had their second.
