AN additional case of Covid-19 has been confirmed in the Highlands – as the number of infected people being treated in the region's hospitals increased.

There have now been 334 positive tests for the coronavirus in the NHS Highland area since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. The number of people with suspected or confirmed coronavirus also rose to 13 last night – up from five the previous day.

The additional Highland case came against a backdrop of 96 new diagnoses across Scotland as a whole. There have now been 14,751 positive tests for Covid-19 since the start of the outbreak, of whom 2184 have died (an increase of 50 since yesterday). In NHS Highland there have been six Covid-19 deaths in the past week – taking the total to 103.

The number of people with confirmed Covid-19 in Scottish hospitals last night was 943 (down from 969). Previous figures also included suspected cases, but these have now been dropped from the daily update "due to discontinuity in suspected cases due to increased levels of screening". Yesterday there were 478 of these suspected cases, on top of the 969 confirmed.

Meanwhile, the Northern Isles and Outer Hebrides continued their long run without freshly confirmed cases of the virus.

NHS Grampian reported 10 more positive tests to take its overall tally to 1216. It was treating 80 people in its hospitals for Covid-19 last night, of whom six were in intensive care – down from 84 and six respectively the previous day.

And there were 18 new cases reported in NHS Tayside, taking that health board area's total to 1617. There was also a slight increase in the number of people being treated for the virus in its hospitals – up three to 21.
