CONFIRMATION of an outbreak of the Indian variant of coronavirus in Fife has created additional apprehension at a time when restrictions elsewhere are being eased.

And concerns about the possible impact of mass gatherings of people in Glasgow over the weekend will feed into the sense of uncertainty, a Highland GP has acknowledged.

Dr Ross Jaffrey, who started the Safe Hands, Saves Lives group to spread the word about the importance of good hygiene at the start of the first outbreak, posted: "First time in a while that the test positive rate hits 2 per cent.

"Highland Council region gets another zero day. The impact of this virus on hospital services has tailed off significantly. Apprehension is filling the lull. The outbreak of the Indian variant is also now confirmed in Kirkcaldy, Fife.

"All eyes will be focused on Glasgow to assess effects the mass gatherings this weekend will have had on this latest variant, and the disease end points.

"If nobody needs hospital admission we may well be able to significantly relax further moving into Summer.

"If people do start falling seriously unwell again we have a major problem that nobody wanted and certainly could have been avoided weeks ago."
