RESILIENT staff at a Ross-shire care home ensured a resident's 100th birthday was celebrated in style – despite the restrictions of the coronavirus lockdown.

While family and friends weren't able to join Avis Eckersley's party at Wyvis House Care Home in Dingwall in person, video technology ensured they could be there in spirit.

A local piper, stationed outside the building, used his daily exercise stint to help her mark the occasion.

Mrs Eckersley was born in Portsmouth but moved to Scotland with her late husband, Clifford, ultimately retiring to the Kiltarlity area.

Home administrator Lorna Munro said Mrs Eckersley had a lovely day and was delighted with her card from the Queen, which made it on time through the post.

She said: "We would sincerely like to thank our residents' relatives for their continued support during this difficult time.

"We do understand that it is a difficult time for them too, not being able to see their loved ones in person, but we are communicating through WhatsApp and Skype, which is helping.

"We would also like to say a big thank you to all the local business and individuals who have donated gifts, or just offered to help if we need it – we really appreciate your thoughts."

She said while some residents were initially sceptical about using Skype, they had adapted well and enjoyed being able to see loved ones that way.

Families sending messages by email can also have them printed out, she said.

"We feel we are an extended family. The staff have been fantastic."
