Police on mobile patrol spotted two cars speeding along a 50mph dual carriageway at up to 80mph near Inverness Shopping Park on the A96.

Inverness Sheriff Court heard that 20-year-old Alexander McDonald and 23-year-old Lewis Mackenzie, both of Ross-shire, were followed and stopped shortly afterwards at around midnight on April 30 last year.

Both men were charged with dangerous driving but pleaded guilty to careless driving.

Mackenzie, who admitted previous convictions for a similar offence and speeding, was driving a Skoda Fabia and his co-accused had a Hyundai i30.

Sheriff Sara Matheson asked their solicitors if they were modified and what was the horsepower of each.

Mhyrin Hill, for McDonald, replied: "There were no modifications." But she confirmed it was a performance vehicle.

John MacColl, for Mackenzie, also confirmed to the sheriff there were no modifications to his client's car and it was 130hp.

Sheriff Matheson told the pair: "This is completely unacceptable driving."

She fined McDonald £470 and endorsed his licence with nine penalty points "because of his lack of experience and his age".

Mackenzie was fined a similar amount but banned from driving for 10 months "because of your record", the sheriff explained.
