North Highland College UHI has found a good home for some of its surplus IT equipment – by passing it onto a local charity encouraging young people to pursue a career in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Maths) subjects.

Budding Engineers community interest company, based in Wick, offers a range of professional educational services for current and future workers to help address the skills shortage within the STEAM industries. With over 25 years of experience in mechanical engineering and computer aided design, it delivers programmes designed to equip anyone from primary school pupils to faculty staff and industry professionals with the essential skills for computer aided design.

Directors Dave and Liz Kerr were delighted to receive a significant donation of redundant IT equipment from the college for recycling, commenting: “We can’t thank the principal and North Highland College UHI enough for their fantastic donation.

“These machines will be refurbished and then donated to children and young adults who struggle to gain access to digital technology.

“Some of the devices we have donated to families so far have made some life changing opportunities, whether it be for education or access to employment.

“With the help from those who donate machines to our project, digital barriers are removed and families and individuals are given the freedom to discover their full potential and achieve goals. Working together with the college like this and in the future will help to promote and highlight the importance of digital technology.”

Principal Debbie Murray said: “North Highland College UHI is delighted to support local initiatives in any way we possibly can. Budding Engineers provides vital services and training to a range of people, and we were delighted to pass on redundant equipment which they can recycle and make best use of.”

Budding Engineers have undertaken a digital recycling project to help put an end to digital device exclusion and laptop poverty. They are currently providing recycled devices to anyone living in the North of Scotland between the ages of five and 25 who do not have access to an adequate device for learning and cannot afford to buy one.
