Coldest UK temperature for more than a decade recorded in part of the Highlands, new Met Office data has confirmed

THE Highlands has recorded the UK's coldest temperature for more than a decade – after the mercury plummeted across the region last night.
A low of -17.1C was recorded by the Met Office in Altnaharra in Sutherland, making it the lowest official temperature recorded since Boxing Day 2010.
But the mercury bottomed out well below -11C in dozens of other Highland locations.
A number of Sutherland locations recorded temperatures below -13C, according to figures from Lee Schofield at Highlands and Islands Weather (@highlandweather on Twitter, and Highlands and Islands Weather on Facebook). These included Klibreck (-16.4C), Kinbrace (-14.7C), Forsinard (-14.1C), Syre (-13.6C), Rosehall (-13.4C) and Lairg (-13.1C).
But a number of other Highland locations also recorded very cold temperatures – including Glenmore (-14C), Carrbridge (-12.9C), Drumochter (-12.3C) and Feshiebridge (-11.8C).
And the cold was accompanied by further snow showers across the region overnight, with the likes of Inverness city centre receiving several centimetres in the small hours of the morning.
Further showers are expected across parts of the Highlands for the remainder of the working week, with yellow warnings for snow currently in place in eastern and northern parts until midday on Friday.
