Storm Éowyn’s severe gales could cause coastal flooding in Wester Ross, residents have been warned.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (Sepa) has issued a flood alert for the area in response to forecasts that gale gusts of up to 90mph will batter the north on Friday and into Saturday.

People living, working or travelling in coastal areas are being warned of dangerous waves and spray overtopping defences.

A spokesperson for Sepa said: “A flood alert has been issued for Wester Ross.

“This alert is for coastal flooding. On Friday into Saturday there is a risk of significant impacts from wave and spray overtopping in exposed locations due to a combination of very strong winds, large waves and storm surge.

“Potential impacts include flooding affecting properties and parts of communities, disruption to infrastructure, and damage to buildings.”

The alert is one of seven that had been issued for parts of Scotland at the time of writing.

Skye and Lochaber are also covered by one of those alerts, as too are the Western Isles, again for coastal flood risks.

Transport is also being impacted. ScotRail has already confirmed that it will operate no trains on Friday, and CalMac has also axed all sailings between Ullapool and Stornoway on Friday.
