A local children’s hospital charity has appointed a new patron from the world of business.

Donald Mathieson, founder and managing director of Inverness firm D&E Coaches, has accepted an invitation to become the only person from the Highlands and Islands currently on the Archie Foundation’s list of high-profile supporters.

Archie Foundation, the official charity to the Highland Children’s Unit at Raigmore Hospital, as well as others in Aberdeen and Tayside, provides extras to support children in NHS care and their families.

Inverness solicitor Mary Nimmo, chairwoman of Archie Highland, said: “The patrons’ list includes several celebrated personalities, but we’ve been conscious of the absence of a Highland name.

“Donald Mathieson has been increasingly involved in our activities in this area, a generous donor who is committed to the cause, which is why I invited him to become a patron and be an ambassador in the Highlands, Grampian and Tayside for our charity.

“We’re delighted that such a good supporter has come on board and his energy will be helpful in promoting our message and events and welcoming other patrons coming to the area.”

Mr Mathieson, whose company marked its 25th anniversary in March, said: “I was surprised and honoured to be asked but I was pleased to be able to accept and ensure there’s a Highlander among the patrons.

“I’ve worked closely with Mary during her term of office over the past six years and see this as another way of supporting her work.

“The lockdown era has been an extremely challenging time for charities such as the Archie Foundation in terms of fundraising and I hope that as a patron I can play my part in assisting its recovery.”

Archie Highland has finalised its first post-lockdown fundraising events – the Archie Golf Day at Nairn Golf Club on October 15 and the Archie Moonlight Ball on November 5 at Kingsmills Hotel.

Ms Nimmo added: “During lockdown, I’ve been truly humbled by local people who have come forward to offer us a contribution. These people have shown true Highland spirit.”
