A CHARITY on the Black Isle has been handed a boost after it received funding from a group of bridge clubs in Inverness.

Black Isle Cares, which operates a number of services for elderly people in the area, received £650 from the Association of Inverness Bridge Clubs (AIBC), which selected the organisation as its chosen charity for 2018.

The money will be used to support the organisation’s Meals on Wheels programme, which provides fresh, nutritious meals from local restaurants.

The funds were raised through a series of fundraising events, including a bridge evening at the Loch Ness Country House Hotel which raised £518 alone.

Lesley Bowman, Black Isle Cares administrator, said: "We are a self-funding charity so we don’t get any government funding.

"We rely entirely on donations from groups and members of the public.

"We have about 30 volunteers just now and about the same number of customers. We do cover a very wide area so any help we get is very much appreciated.

"It’s a huge honour that the bridge association has chosen us as its charity for this year.

"The money will be so important in helping us provide this service to older people in the Black Isle."

A spokeswoman for the AIBC said: "Each year, the bridge community in Inverness organises an event in aid of a local charity.

"Black Isle Cares have done a wonderful job in setting up a local care system and a meals service."

Black Isle Cares was set up in 2015 in a bid to help improve care services in the area. It works with the NHS and Highland Home Carers and is governed by a group of volunteer trustees.
