Ullapool Sea Savers have been learning about the ways used coffee pods can be recycled, after their installation of the new coffee–pod recycling point in Tesco Ullapool.

The Sea Savers also chose to empty the used coffee from the pods before sending them off to be recycled, so that the weight of the pods was reduced from 2050g to 250g.

This means that when the coffee pods are being sent off to the recycling unit, they use less fuel to transport, and therefore leave a smaller carbon footprint.

The Sea Savers plan to use the coffee grounds in the Ullapool Sea Savers garden, to ensure that nothing goes to waste.

After this, the coffee pods are sent to Podback, who recycle them into new materials. Podback does take the coffee pods with coffee still in them, but the Sea Savers never miss an opportunity to reduce emissions!

Ullapool Sea Savers spokesperson, Noel said: "The Sea Savers were delighted to find their wee collection bin loaded up with coffee pods, ready to be recycled!

"Massive thanks to everyone who dropped in their pods, it's great for all of us to have ways to help make a difference in the face of these huge environmental challenges.

"It's great to see the kids coming up with simple, positive solutions to the small challenges they see in every day life for people who want to live in a more environmentally friendly way. We are really grateful to Tesco Ullapool for supporting them by hosting the collection point too, and helping our young people understand that small steps taken together, can make a big difference in our community."

The Sea Savers have also been researching about sustainability on the NASA Climate Kids site today, using the resources to learn how to explain links between climate change, the greenhouse effect, carbon, C02, recycling, and how all those things are important to our work protecting the seas.
