A Highland businessman has explained the 'boom' over a small community on Monday evening – and apologised for the noise.

Ruaridh Ormiston, at Highland Horse Fun, posted: "Apologies for the explosion in Kingussie this evening about 6pm.

"We had found some unexploded ordinance (UXO) at my father’s house in Newtonmore that had belonged to my grandfather and was probably left over from training the local LDV / Home Guard (Dad’s Army) during WW2..."

The ordnance was mostly flares, Mr Ormiston explained.

There were also detonators and explosive trip wires.

"And a lot of old ammunition too," he went on.

The police attended and sent pictures to their experts and the Army Bomb Disposal Squad was dispatched from Edinburgh to deal with the job.

"The ammunition was removed for disposal elsewhere but the flares (some containing phosphorus) where blown up in one of my fields at Kingussie - the bang would have been much bigger without the 40 sandbags that the police got from the roads department."

He offered his gratitude to the squad.

"Many thanks to everyone for their professionalism and service with a smile.

"The army boys let Becca Cameron press the button!"
