AN extraordinary young person from the Black Isle has been announced as a finalist in this year’s Sunday Mail Young Scot Awards in recognition of their incredible achievements.

Kieran Reid (11) impressed an esteemed panel of judges with his outstanding contribution to the local community.

Kieran is a finalist in the Unsung Hero category, which recognises young people who have overcome difficult personal circumstances to go the extra mile for others.

Avoch-based Kieran lost his father at just six years old, when the fisherman was tragically washed overboard during a gale force storm. Just weeks later, Kieran began to raise money for the local search and rescue team who had searched tirelessly for his dad.

In the years since, Kieran has helped to raise £10,000 for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution and hopes to join the volunteer crew one day.

The Sunday Mail Young Scot Awards aims to recognise and inspire the nation’s young people. This year’s winners will be announced during a live online ceremony on April 22 – marking the Award’s 15th year of championing and celebrating the achievements of young people from all communities across Scotland.

The finalists join a prestigious roll call of previous recipients including Andy Murray, Olympian Laura Muir, and top vlogger Jamie Genevieve. Recent winners include actor Ncuti Gatwa from Netflix’s Sex Education and the team behind Fridays For Future Scotland.

Louise Macdonald, Chief Executive of Young Scot, said: “Kieran’s inspiring achievements show how important young people are to Scotland and their incredible contribution to communities in the Black Isle. A huge congratulations to all of the 2021 finalists – we can’t wait to celebrate their achievements at the Awards ceremony!”
