A BLACK Isle SWI group was given a “touching and informative” presentation on a charity that looks after dogs needing rehoming.

Resolis SWI welcomed speaker Kayleigh MacLean from the Glasgow branch of Dogs Trust. The charity also has centres in West Lothian, England and Ireland.

The Dog Trust relies on 52 per cent of donations from the public to assist with looking after dogs which need rehoming. It is famous for the non-destruction policy “a healthy dog will never be put to sleep” and there is no time limit for the dogs when they come into their care.

Another of their famous slogans was created in 1978: “A dog is for life and not just for Christmas.”

Dogs Trust care for 14,000 dogs each year across the 22 centres. Average length of stay for a dog is 46 days but that depends on the dog. Kayleigh advised in 2023 there had been a total of 45,000 calls from people unable to look after their dog. She stressed the importance to reach out to them if help is needed. She said there is no judgement handing over your dog to them and that that is safer than the dog being passed over on unregulated internet sites.

The Trust offers many services including foster care, contribution to vet costs, education and a community team which delivers school workshops and homelessness services supporting owners with dogs. The freedom project is for people fleeing domestic violence. In this case, the dog is fostered until the owner is ready and they can be reunited.

She said it’s possible to apply online for a Canine Care card – this provides the owner with the peace of mind that their pet will be looked after should they a) have a life-changing diagnosis b) need to go into a care home or c) die.
