SCORES of shoppers in Ross-shire are understood to have been targeted by a scam involving unsolicited calls claiming to be from online retailer Amazon.

Police have issued a warning after reports of calls to landlines from someone claiming to represent Amazon in relation to a recent purchase.

In one incident being flagged up by police, the caller indicated that a refund was required for a recent purchase and tried to encourage the recipient to log onto a website to process this payment.

The resident - who made a recent genuine purchase - became suspicious and terminated the call.

Fortunately no personal or financial information was compromised.

Highland police say shoppers should be "extremely cautious" of any unsolicited call where they are asked to provide personal or financial information as "sadly it is probably a scam".

They have issued a web link for more advice about how to protect yourself from fraud.

Hundreds of people have commented on the police's post on social media, saying they have been targeted in similar ways.
