A new bakery project is on track to rise from the ashes of a deliberate fire attack.

Harry Gow the Inverness based bakery company was last summer on the verge of opening an upmarket bakery shop in the former tourist information centre just off the A9 at North Kessock with the promise of 15 new jobs.

Then in the early hours of July 3 the fire service and police were alerted to a major blaze that extensively damaged the nearly completed premises. A full investigation revealed that the fire had been started deliberately. No-one has so far been charged.

Inverness-based Harry Gow had hoped to have the shop up and running last August, but now have a new target date of early spring with William Gray Contractors progressing on the 12-week contract this week.

Director Fraser Gow said: "We are back on the project with renewed vigour and looking forward again to opening, hopefully in early spring.

"The fire was a major blow to us but it is onwards and upwards and we are quite excited at the prospect of opening."

He said that because of the fire, measures may have to be taken to prevent any repetition.

He said: "The building is not ours, we lease it, therefore we and/or the landlords will take the necessary steps the insurers will require regarding fire prevention and general security."

Some sort of tourist information service may be included within the shop in conjunction with VisitScotland. The site is popular with dolphin spotters.
