Dingwall born and raised comedian Daniel Downie will return to the Highlands later this month to headline the Inverness Comedy Club.

Comedian Daniel Downie — a former teacher at Charleston Academy in Inverness — first stepped onto a comedy club stage over a decade ago, when he performed a five-minute open spot at The Stand comedy club in Glasgow at their beginners’ night, Red Raw — where he now regularly headlines.

Daniel is now based in Edinburgh, where he’s gone from teaching children to getting laughs as a full-time comedian and tour guide.

“I’ve been in Edinburgh for fifteen years” says Daniel, “and while I love living there, I do miss the Highlands if I’m away for too long – it’s such a stunning part of the world, and I’m lucky to have grown up here; the landscape and the history really inspired me to do what I do today”.

Alongside his comedy career, Daniel runs Mountebank Tours, which offers whisky tastings and daily comedy walking tours of Edinburgh.

“It’s a little bit different to the usual tours that are offered in Edinburgh,” Daniel said.

“There’s obvious a lot of information in there – as a historian my biggest problem in Edinburgh is deciding what to leave out of the tour – but I wanted to make the it fun as well as informative, you don’t need to know much about Scottish history to take the tour, it’s my job to share that side of things with people, but I wanted to the stories to be entertaining and funny – I think that makes things more memorable” he added.

Daniel will also be appearing at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe this August, with his solo comedy show, Daniel Downie: Is Scottish, in which he takes a humorous trip through Scottish history and identity to explore the origins of some well-known Scottish stereotypes.

“It’s a very Scottish show, by a very Scottish comedian,” says Daniel.

“Audiences can expect a lot of laughs, but also to learn a few things about the history of Scotland and the stereotypes that people associate with Scots and Scotland”.

Daniel will be headlining The Inverness Comedy Club at The Tooth and Claw, Inverness on Friday 27 June at 8pm.
