Avoch day care service gets mixed report after unannounced inspection
An Avoch day care service has received a mixed report from the Care Inspectorate, following an unannounced inspection.
Avoch Early Learning and Child Care, located within Avoch Primary school, received multiple positive key messages as well as two “areas for improvement” following the inspection on August 28 and 29 of this year.
The service is registered to provide a care service for a maximum of 78 children aged three years to those attending primary school.
Avoch Early Learning and Child Care received a rating of ‘Good’ for their staff team and their care, play and learning. The service also received a rating of ‘Adequate’ for their setting and leadership.
The report said: “Children experienced nurturing, warm, caring interactions and support from staff, which supported children’s emotional wellbeing and care, promoting a sense that they were valued.
“Children were generally busy, happily engaged in play and having fun.
“Staff recognised when children were engaged in their play and did not disrupt this, instead thoughtfully asking questions to extend children’s ideas and thinking.
“Staff interactions were respectful between each other, supporting a positive ethos and contributing to the calm atmosphere that children experienced.”
However, the report went on to highlight that it found “inconsistencies” in infection prevention control measures, such as the toilet doors, which open directly onto the playroom, were left open and therefore increased the potential for cross contamination. The report went on to state that once the issue was highlighted to the manager, they began to take action to ensure the doors were closed over.
Another area for improvement by the inspectors was that gaps in systems and processes to keep children healthy and safe had not been identified. For example, inspectors found a “discrepancy” in recorded medical information, although action was immediately taken on the issue.
