A CHARITY race at Inverness Airport is set to return for its second year.

Run the Runway, which is organised to raise funds for Maggie’s Centres raised £29,000 last year and will be held again on August 25.

Now the organisers of the unique event are desperate for it to be even bigger and better.

Maggie’s Highland’s centre fundraising manager Andrew Benjamin said: "It’s such a unique event. There were planes landing and taking off just a few yards from us at the launch.

"We are really buzzing for this year’s event.

"We didn’t know what to expect last year but we ended up with 110 people taking part, and for them to raise as much as they did was great.

"We are hopeful that this year we will have around 250 people taking part.

"The cost of keeping the centre running for a year is about £480,000, so we really rely quite heavily on all our fundraisers."

Mr Benjamin is hoping that the unique nature of the event will appeal to fundraisers, and revealed that there are some extra-special prizes on offer.

He said: "The event itself is just so unique. It’s the best event I’ve ever been involved in organising.

"People can take part with family and friends or do it as part of a business group. It’s open to everyone.

"There are different categories. The main prize, for the person who raises the most money overall, is two tickets from Inverness to any of the London airports via Easyjet, and from there onwards to anywhere on the Easyjet network.

"That’s a huge benefit to working with the airport. The airlines saw what it meant to the charity last year and have now decided to get involved.

"We also have prizes for the best fancy dress, the fastest walker and the fastest runner.

"I have always said people should have fun raising money and they will do that here."

Run the Runway has a minimum sponsorship limit of £115 per person.
