Eighty-one new cases of coronavirus detected across the NHS Highland area; region has now had almost 500 fresh Covid-19 infections in a week

EIGHTY-one new Covid-19 cases were recorded in the NHS Highland health board area in the past 24 hours.

The region’s cumulative number of cases rose from 3278 to 3359 when the latest daily update was published at 2pm.

The figure is almost 500 cases higher than this time last week.

Across Scotland there were 2160 positive tests in the past 24 hours. This represents 7.5 per cent of all tests carried out in that period.

Some 1860 people were receiving treatment for Covid-19 in Scottish hospitals last night - an increase of 31.

Of those, 141 were in intensive care. This was down one on Thursday’s update.

And sadly a further 61 people who tested positive for Covid-19 in the past 28 days have since died. It takes the Scottish death toll by that measurement to 5227.

Meanwhile, elsewhere in the north of Scotland, there were no new positive tests in NHS Eileanan Siar, but NHS Shetland (four infections) and NHS Orkney (one) both reported new cases.

NHS Grampian recorded 162 fresh positive tests - for a cumulative tally of 10,847.

And NHS Tayside detected 131 new cases, to take its overall total to 10,679.

Scotland has now had 159,239 confirmed cases of Covid-19 since the start of the pandemic.

Some 224,840 people in Scotland have now received their first dose of the vaccine. This is up more than 16,500 since yesterday.
