Wester Ross 17-turbine wind farm bid lodged with Highland Council planners

AN Irish energy company is seeking planning permission to construct a wind farm north-west of Garve, south-east of the Loch Glascarnoch dam.
The Kirkan Wind Farm is planned to include 17 turbines reaching a height of 175m and with a total generating capacity of 50MW.
The project is located on Strathvaich Estate to the east of Corriemoillie and Lochluichart windfarms and, according to initial background papers, will include 10,835m of access track, two meteorological masts, two borrow pits, transformers, underground cables, on-site sub-station control building and four temporary construction compounds.
One of these may potentially to be retained permanently to host an energy storage facility, according to an environmental impact assessment (EIA) lodged with papers before Highland Council planners.
Kirkan Wind Farm Limited is a project company owned by Coriolis Energy Limited and ESB Asset Development Limited.
ESB claims to be Ireland’s premier energy company and is a leading independent power generator in the UK market.
According to the EIA, the wider landscape at the site is characterised by rolling moorland, with numerous blocks of
forestry plantations also present.
Surrounding land use consists of open moorland deer stalking and rough grazing. There is also an area of mixed plantation within the eastern side of the proposed development
area.
There are no in-use built structures within the proposed development area.
