Two bikers were caught in a police speed trap travelling along a popular straight stretch of road in the Highlands which has snared many speeders.

Arthur Hedley, a 46 year old of East Balhalgardy, Inverurie, and his 47 year old companion, Michael Mathers of Broadford Gardens, Blackburn, admitted at Inverness Sheriff Court to speeding at 100mph on the 60mph A832 near Achnasheen on the morning of September 1 last year.

Sheriff Ian Cruickshank was told that both men would lose their well-paid jobs if they lost their licences and had five penalty points imposed on their licences.

But the sheriff told them that the fine would be "significant to mark the disapproval of the court." They each have to pay £1175 within two months.

Hedley's solicitor, John MacColl, told the court: "They were entirely co-operative with the police on being stopped.

“The court will be familiar with the locus as it is a long clear straight stretch of road where the speed can be allowed to creep up.

“He sold his bike soon after as he was disgusted with himself.

"He is a valued employee but his licence is essential for his work."

Mathers’ lawyer, Matthew O'Neill, said on behalf of his client: "It was an extremely foolish course of conduct and there has been nothing since. But disqualification would have a huge impact on his family as he would lose his job."
