Ross County’s winless run has increased to 11 games as they remain rooted to the bottom of the Premiership after defeat against Rangers.

The Staggies are now six points off Partick Thistle as Owen Coyle faces a bigger task to get County out of relegation trouble.

County got off to a nervous start in the opening minutes as a poor clearance from goalkeeper Aaron McCarey landed at the feet of Candeias who drove forward and unleashed a shot which stung the keeper’s hands.

But he managed  to claw the ball back at the second attempt before heading into the net.

Jamie Murphy then had two shots at goal with his first attempt saved by McCarey and his second hacked off the line by Kenny Van Der Weg.

But Rangers would break the deadlock after 21 minutes when Candeias fired in a low thunderbolt from 25 yards which found the bottom left corner of the net.

County were fortunate not to go 2-0 behind minutes later when a poor pass by Van Der Weg was intercepted by Alfredo Morelos who tore up field and cut into the centre at the edge of the box before firing just wide.

The hosts responded positively in the second half when Tim Chow’s great pass found Jason Naismith down the right wing and his cross found Van Der Weg in the box whose shot was blocked by the Rangers defence.

Harry Souttar almost scored an own goal for the second game in succession when he almost headed Candeias’ cross into his own net. But the on loan Stoke City defender was relieved to see the ball go inches wide of the right hand post.

Ross County claimed for a penalty when Ross Draper said his header from Jason Naismith’s cross was blocked by David Bates hand but referee Steven Maclean disagreed.

Rangers doubled their advantage eight minutes from time when in a swift move up field, Jaosn Cummings finished off from 15 yards with a powerful shot into the bottom left hand corner.

Ross County pulled one back from the penalty spot in the 89th minute when Russell Martin handballed David Ngog's shot. The Frenchman kept his cool to fire past Foderingham but were unable to find an equaliser in injury time.
