FACED with the much-touted Beast from the East, a hardy quartet from Ullapool stripped off and took the plunge in ice cold snow to show that when it comes to community spirit, the west is the best and won’t be put off by a wintry pest!
Their bone-chilling efforts warmed the cockles of more than 100 locals backing a fundraiser for the community owned swimming pool at Lochbroom Leisure Centre and looks set to go viral as word of the hilarious footage does the rounds.
The competitors set themselves a £2000 target in the hastily organised individual medley snow swim to raise money for the upkeep of the community swimming pool.
Crawl, backstroke and a version of the butterfly all featured in the race which came as snow closed schools and roads.
Organiser Matthew Haughey of Ullapool was surprised by the response. He said: "We just decided to do this the night before. We put out notices on Facebook on the morning of the event and over 100 people turned up to watch.
" It was very cold when I first jumped in however hearing all the spectators laughing and cheering us on spurned me on to the finish.
"I was totally buzzing after and I went straight for a sauna for a warm up. It was great fun to do and it goes to show that we can have fun in all weather conditions."
The brave foursome also comprised Ciara Macpherson, Tom Grant and William Godding, all of whom took the plunge in temperatures of -4C in over 18 inches of snow.
Renowned long distance and ice swimmer Norman Todd, who is also from Ullapool, was one of the gob-smacked spectators.
He said: "I have done a few crazy things in the past but this was nuts on a whole new level! It was great fun to watch and fantastic that they are raising money for such a valuable community resource."
