THE SNP candidate hoping to replace Rob Gibson as a Ross-shire MSP when he stands down at next year's Holyrood election has been named.

She is Gail Ross, currently a Highland Councillor serving Wick in Caithness.

Cllr Ross won the ballot of SNP members in Caithness, Sutherland and Ross to go forward as the party's prospective candidate for the seat in the May 2016 poll.

The post will become vacant on the retiral of the current MSP Rob Gibson next May.

Said Cllr Ross:"I am delighted to have been selected by the SNP members to be the candidate for Caithness, Sutherland and Ross at next year's Scottish Parliament election.

"I want to thank everyone for all their help and support.

"Now we must build on the work of our MSP Rob Gibson to ensure a strong Northern voice continues to be heard loud and clear in Holyrood. "

Rob Gibson said: "Gail has the experience of winning her council elections, of serving Wick and making her mark in the Highland Council.

"Now is her chance to shine on the Scottish stage. She is the very best SNP candidate we can have in the critical next phase of Scotland's story."
