A GROUP of budding young Alness "rock stars" made their mark at a dance face-off with counterparts from across the Highlands.

Alness Academy entered a 50-strong team of pupils for Rock Challenge – an international event which has recently taken root in the Highlands.

Staged at Eden Court, the competition challenges pupils to tell the story of a pressing social issue through the medium of dance, taking full responsibility for every aspect of the production, from choreography to set design.

The pupils create an eight-minute dance routine to tell their story.

Last year, Alness won two prizes for their Alness Westside Story routine.

The secondary’s theme this year was about making the right choices in life as you can’t turn back time. This year Alness came third overall in a very close contest and won no fewer than six individual awards for performance skills; costume design; drama skills; school community support; health & fitness quiz; spirit of rock challenge.

Alness Academy was also successfu in gaining five local sponsors for the team: Technip; CRC Evans; Pat Munro; Robertson Construction and The Commercial Hotel.

Speaking after the event, rector Ken MacIver said, "All our sponsors have shown great kindness and a belief in the youngsters of our area. A huge thank you to them all."
