DINGWALL Academy celebrated winning the North of Scotland Schools Cup when they defeated Kirkwall Grammar School 4-1 in the final.

The school’s senior team lifted the trophy in front of their fellow pupils with the final being held at the Dingwall Asttro pitch.

It is believed that it is the first time that Dingwall Academy have won the North of Scotland Schools Cup, with the competition being played for the first time in five years due to the impact of the pandemic.

Craig Lawrie scored twice in the final with Aiden Gibb and Lewis Mackay also finding the net to give Dingwall Academy victory.

A special presentation was held at Dingwall Academy to mark the team’s achievements.

Physical education teacher Kevin McKie says it was a tremendous achievement by the team to win the trophy and beating off competition from across the north of Scotland.

He said: “I think it is the first time that the school have won the North of Scotland Schools Cup. It is the first time that the competition has been held in five years.

“Our head teacher organised a presentation for all the players to be presented with their medals.

“We played against teams from across the north, including Culloden and Lossiemouth, before going on to play Stornoway in the quarter finals and Ellon in the semi finals.

“The competition spans a huge area and as it is a random draw we never know who we are going to get.

“There is also a financial cost to play in the tournament so we are always on the lookout for sponsorship.”

McKie says Dingwall Academy has teams for all the age groups at the schools to take part in football for both boys and girls.

He hopes that the senior team’s achievement will inspire younger players at the school and will be keen to be part of their cup defence next season.

“We have teams at first, second and third year as well as the seniors/ We hold training every week and there is always football available for pupils.

“Some of the senior players may be leaving after the summer but we are hopeful only two or three are going to leave. It is good for the younger ones to progress into as well.”

Five of the players in the cup winning squad have been selected to represent the North of Scotland Select of the Scottish Schools Cup.
