Sir — After reading your letters page last week I felt I had to write in regards the "Action against fouling menace".

Now I have absolutely no problems with people picking up their dog's mess far from it, and well done all who do.

However it did seem somewhat ironic to me that our Highland Council has found the money to pay for and hand out free "poop scoop bags" using council staff, who will be travelling to various locations all around the county over the space of a week, whilst at the very same time closing public toilets for the use of the rate paying public and our valuable tourist market.

Do they think more of our dogs than the general public? Are we to get issued with "poop scoop bags " for us humans too instead of public toilets?

Their priorities seem to me to be all wrong, spending money on something like this is no more than a public relations exercise on behalf of our esteemed council, whilst behind the scenes they are plotting to close all sorts of vital services, from the toilets that are already closed to the libraries, swimming pools, community centres, museums, care homes, day care and of course our schools.

Mike Cantlay, chairman of Visit Scotland said, "selling Scotland isn't just Visit Scotland's business, it's everyone's business".

How true that statement is, although you would not think it was anything to do with our Highland Council who seem to be hell bent on driving our tourist trade away, by closing a lot of the services we have become accustomed to.

The tourist likewise is expecting a welcome and the basic facilities of a civilised society from our area and does not want to be faced with closed signs and padlocked doors, we need them to keep coming and to keep spending their £4billion every year, we do not need a council that is driving them away.
